I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.
In October of 2014, during a report given by the Alpha Women’s Resource Center at the annual Clarke County Baptist Association meeting, it was mentioned that transportation barriers prevented many of the center’s clients from coming in for services. A month later, First Baptist Church of Fulton contacted the center and donated a 25 passenger school bus that the church was no longer using. Initially, we thought about using the bus to pick up clients but after calculating the cost for operating the bus, the Alpha Board of Directors decided it was not a feasible plan. We then researched the possibility of retrofitting the bus and converting it to a mobile ultrasound unit. A call was made to ICU Mobile, an organization that specializes in ultrasound mobile units, and the rest as they say is history. After much prayer, consideration, and information gathering, the Alpha Women’s Resource Center has made the decision to become an ICU Mobile affiliate. ICU Mobile is a Christian organization whose mission is to “Go Serve Women, Go Save Lives, Go Share Jesus.” They equip pregnancy care centers with an RV designed from the chassis up for the purpose of providing mobile services to those who are unaware of the pregnancy care center that is in their community or who are unable to come to the center site due to a lack of transportation.
Why a Mobile Unit?
The Alpha Women’s Resource Center serves clients in Clarke, Washington, and Choctaw counties. Consider the following statistics related to pregnancy, abortion, and infant and maternal care:
- In 2013, there were 520 live births in these three counties (Center for Health Statistics), yet only about 5% of the mothers came to the Alpha center for services.
- There are no abortion clinics in the three counties we serve, yet 55% of the abortions performed in the State of Alabama were completed in Mobile and Tuscaloosa (Center for Health Statistics), both only a few hours away from the counties we serve.
- Alabama has been ranked as the worst state to have a baby based on infant and maternal health as major health factors. Alabama has one of the lowest numbers of OB-GYNs per capita physicians serving a population of 2 million women according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Thirty-three of Alabama’s 67 counties do not have any OB GYNs, and few hospitals offer labor and delivery services. (Information cited from WalletHub Sept 2014)
Did That Touch Your Heart?
The cost of a new mobile ultrasound unit including the ultrasound machine is $166,000.
While this may seem to be a huge financial investment, the return on the investment is eternal in terms of lives that will be impacted for the Glory of God. Will you GO with us to reach more women, men, and children bringing them the needed resources, education and hope they so desperately need?
Our prayer is that you will answer with a resounding YES!
